SHIRA PLATEAU DAY HIKE
Your day begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, followed by a scenic drive to the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive passes through charming rural villages and fertile farmlands before arriving at Londorosi Gate for registration and permits.
From the gate, the hike starts through lush montane rainforest, home to black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of bird species. After emerging from the forest zone, you’ll reach the Murum Barrier (approx. 3,400 meters), where the landscape opens into wide alpine terrain.
From here, you begin a steady ascent toward Shira Cathedral (Cathedral Point) a dramatic volcanic rock formation offering some of the most impressive views on the mountain. The hike takes about 3 hours, rewarding you with panoramic views of the Shira Plateau, Mount Meru in the distance, and Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped summit.
After enjoying the views, taking photos, and resting, you’ll descend back to the Murum Barrier, where your vehicle awaits for the return transfer to Moshi or Arusha.
