3-Day Oldonyo Lengai Climbing

Our journey begins after breakfast in Arusha, heading north through Mto wa Mbu and the traditional village of Engaruka. The drive offers ever-changing views of mountains, dry riverbeds, and Maasai homesteads as you descend into the dramatic Great Rift Valley.
By early afternoon, you’ll arrive in the Lake Natron area and check in at your camp or lodge, where lunch will be served with magnificent views of Oldonyo Lengai standing tall in the distance.
Later in the day, take a guided walk to the Ngare Sero Waterfalls a refreshing adventure through narrow gorges leading to crystal-clear pools where you can swim. As evening falls, visit the shores of Lake Natron, a surreal landscape alive with thousands of pink flamingos and other bird species. Return to your camp for dinner and an overnight stay under the starry African sky.

The adventure begins before midnight. Wake up around 11:30 PM for tea and light snacks, then start your ascent under a blanket of stars, guided by your professional mountain guide. The early climb helps you avoid the intense heat of the day while offering a magical night-time experience.
As dawn approaches, reach the summit of Oldonyo Lengai just in time to witness a spectacular sunrise over the Great Rift Valley. From the peak, take in panoramic views of Mount Meru, Mount Kilimanjaro, Lake Natron, and the vast Maasai plains below a moment of pure wonder.
After exploring the crater and lava formations, begin your descent back to the base, where a well-deserved breakfast awaits. Spend the afternoon resting at your lodge, or opt for a cultural visit to a nearby Maasai boma to learn about their traditions and spiritual connection to the “Mountain of God.” End your day with a relaxing dinner and overnight stay.

After breakfast, take a short-guided nature walk around Lake Natron, famous for its striking red waters and diverse birdlife. Visit the fascinating Engare Sero footprints, ancient human footprints preserved in volcanic ash for thousands of years one of Tanzania’s most remarkable archaeological sites. Enjoy the scenic drive back to Arusha, with a stop for lunch and photo opportunities along the Great Rift Valley escarpment.
