Marangu Village Day Trip

The tour will be of visiting the Marangu village where you will enjoy the cultural tour, coffee tour, waterfall tour and the caves visit and with time you can visit the Marangu Climbing gate where there are the Kilimanjaro Mountain Park Headquarters. Marangu is one of the most popular starting points for anyone who wants to climb Kilimanjaro, and the place to be if you want to learn more about Chagga culture and history.

Tour itinerary

Pick up from Moshi town for an hour drive to Marangu village where your first stop will be at the Marangu gate getting to know better the climb of the Kilimanjaro Mountain and the drive will end there where you will continue on your next stop on foot. One of your tour highlights are the Chagga caves (Tunnels) and their history that were dug about 200 years ago by the Chagga, hiding from attacks by the Masai during the Masai-Chagga war and you will nearby visit and see a traditional Chagga house. You will then have the coffee tour enjoying the coffee from the plantation, harvesting the beans and making the coffee powders ready to make a cup of coffee; you will participate from the very first step of making coffee to drinking it.

Depending on your readiness, you can take a short climb to one of the many waterfalls in the area. The trail can be a bit steep, but it’s never far and doable for anyone in a normal physical condition but remembers to put on your shoes. Here you can enjoy the view of the falling water and swimming. There after you will visit a Chagga museum which does not open throughout the year so this depends on the time for your visit.

As you are in the Chagga land, you will be treated with Chagga local lunch and get to taste the Chagga traditional local made drink called ‘mbege’ or banana beer. This will mark the end of your day trip to Marangu village where you will take your drive back to Moshi town.
